The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, turned tragic on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, as a deadly stampede claimed at least 30 lives and left dozens injured. The festival, held every 12 years in the city of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, saw an estimated 100 million devotees converge to take a sacred dip in the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers.

The chaos erupted in the early hours of the morning, though the exact cause of the stampede remains unclear. Authorities fear the death toll may rise as rescue efforts continue. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the victims' families and wishing a swift recovery for the injured. He assured the public that he is in constant communication with state officials to manage the situation effectively.

The significance of the festival was heightened this year due to a rare celestial alignment occurring after 144 years, making this particular holy dip especially auspicious for Hindu devotees. The event, known as 'Mauni Amavasya,' draws millions seeking spiritual purification and blessings. To accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims, authorities had established an extensive temporary infrastructure, including a sprawling tent city, over 3,000 kitchens, 150,000 toilets, communication towers, roads, and 11 hospitals.

Despite the presence of approximately 50,000 security personnel deployed to maintain order, the sheer density of the crowd led to an uncontrollable situation. Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as people scrambled to find safety amidst the overwhelming rush of devotees.

In South Korea, the holiday, known as Seollal, is marked by gift-giving, traditional games, and a special ceremony honoring ancestors. However, it’s also a time when younger generations face a barrage of intrusive questions about career, marriage, and family—so much so that social media users have dubbed these awkward interrogations the “Holiday Nagging Menu.”

Vietnam’s Tết festival, often likened to a second Christmas, is a time for reconnecting with family. Homes are decorated with peach blossoms and kumquat trees, symbolizing growth and prosperity. Children eagerly await red envelopes, just as their Western counterparts anticipate Christmas presents.

Mongolia’s Tsagaan Sar, the Mongolian Lunar New Year, differs in its timing, falling on March 1 this year. This festival emphasizes respect for elders, with traditional greetings and symbolic gifts like snuff bottles exchanged to strengthen relationships.

A Global Celebration with Local Adaptations

Interestingly, some Chinese citizens feel that Lunar New Year is now celebrated more vibrantly outside China than within. A viral social media trend, "Chinese Spring Festival is the world's festival," has gained traction, showcasing elaborate dragon dances in Paris, fireworks in Germany, and traditional Chinese attire worn in Mexico. Some lament the diminishing presence of traditional customs in modern China, particularly the restriction of firecrackers due to environmental policies.

 

Even the iconic Chinese New Year’s Gala, a television event watched by millions, has come under scrutiny. Critics argue that it prioritizes projecting China's global image rather than preserving the authenticity of the festival for its own people.

Modern Challenges and Changing Traditions

Governments in different countries are also shaping the way the festival is observed. In China, authorities have cracked down on online discussions that challenge traditional family values. This year, internet censors are discouraging conversations about non-marriage and non-childbirth, reflecting government concerns over the nation’s declining birth rate. This move has sparked debate, as many young people feel pressured to conform to outdated societal expectations.

Meanwhile, in Taiwan, this year's Lunar New Year holiday stretches across nine days, encouraging both domestic travel and overseas vacations. Record numbers of travelers have left the island, with Japan, South Korea, and Thailand among the top destinations.

South Korea presents another unique Lunar New Year tradition: giving cans of Spam as gifts. Though originally introduced by the U.S. military during the Korean War, Spam has become a prized delicacy and a symbol of respect during the holiday, despite its declining popularity in recent years.

As the Year of the Snake unfolds, the Lunar New Year continues to evolve, blending ancient customs with modern influences. The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, was engulfed in chaos as demonstrators stormed embassies and set tyres ablaze in protest against international inaction over the escalating conflict in the eastern city of Goma. The unrest, which took place on January 29, 2025, was fueled by outrage over allegations that Rwanda and Uganda are backing the M23 rebel group.

A City in Turmoil

Responding to a call from a youth collective urging citizens to “Paralyse the City,” hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Kinshasa’s upscale Gombe district. The protests quickly turned violent as they targeted the embassies of Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, France, Belgium, and the United States, blaming these nations for either supporting M23 or failing to intervene in the crisis.

Angry protestors accused Rwanda and Uganda of directly aiding the M23 rebels, who launched a rapid offensive in North Kivu province, reaching Goma’s outskirts and seizing control of its airport after fierce street battles. Demonstrators also criticized the broader international community for what they see as diplomatic complacency.

Hundreds of angry demonstrators responding on Tuesday to the "Paralyse the City" call of a youth collective gathered in the upscale district of Gombe in the north of Kinshasa. 

“Enough is enough, we’re going to destroy everything here. Today, we’re going to finish with Rwanda,” shouted one protester in front of the Rwandan embassy to the cheers of the crowd. Nearby, thick smoke rose from burning tyres, symbolizing the rising tensions in the country.

Embassies Vandalized and Looted

As fury mounted, the perimeter wall of the French embassy was set alight, with graffiti scrawled across it reading: “Betrayal over a long period of time … let’s end it now.” Protesters also stormed the Ugandan mission, looting furniture and other items before escaping on motorcycles and taxis.

The embassies of Belgium and the United States were similarly targeted, with demonstrators decrying their perceived failure to take a stronger stance against Rwanda and Uganda. The scenes of destruction underscored the depth of frustration felt by many Congolese citizens who see foreign involvement as exacerbating the conflict.

Heavy Police Presence and Government Response

Members of the Congolese National Police’s special units were deployed to guard diplomatic buildings, but they struggled to contain the widespread unrest. Protesters blocked major roads with burning tyres, further paralyzing parts of the city. Images from the protests showed riot police standing guard outside embassies as tensions flared.

The protests in Kinshasa are a direct response to the ongoing violence in North Kivu, where M23 rebels have made significant territorial gains. The group, which was previously defeated in 2013, has resurged with alarming speed, allegedly with the backing of Rwanda and Uganda—claims that both nations deny. The rebels’ capture of Goma, a vital regional hub, has only deepened fears of prolonged instability.

Protesters also targeted the embassies of Belgium and the US, and looted the Ugandan mission.

As the crisis unfolds, Congolese citizens continue to demand decisive action from both their own government and the international community. With tensions running high, the path forward remains uncertain, but the message from Kinshasa’s streets is clear: the people will not stay silent in the face of perceived betrayal and inaction.
