//Rescuers Race Against Time After Deadly Myanmar Earthquake//

News is knowledge, Knowledge is news /

Rescuers work at the site of a damaged building, in the aftermath of a strong earthquake, in Mandalay, Myanmar, March 30, 2025.

Rescuers in Myanmar and Thailand are working tirelessly to find survivors after a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday. The disaster has killed nearly 2,000 people and left thousands more injured or trapped under collapsed buildings.

A Miracle Rescue in Mandalay

After being trapped under the rubble of the Great Wall Hotel in Mandalay for 60 hours, a woman was pulled out alive by a team of Chinese, Russian, and local rescuers.

People look on as search and rescue operations continue in the aftermath of a strong earthquake, in Mandalay, Myanmar, March 29, 2025.

Widespread Destruction in Myanmar

The earthquake, one of the most powerful in Myanmar's history, caused widespread destruction, damaging thousands of buildings, roads, and power lines. Hospitals, already struggling due to ongoing civil conflict, are overwhelmed with injured survivors.

Heavy machinery operate at the site of a building that collapsed, following a strong earthquake, in Bangkok, Thailand, March 30, 2025.
The Myanmar Red Cross has called it “a level of devastation unseen in over a century in Asia.” Relief efforts have been complicated by the country's ongoing civil war, which has left critical infrastructure in ruins and made aid delivery difficult.

Desperate Search in Thailand

In Bangkok, Thailand’s capital, emergency teams are frantically searching for 76 people feared trapped under the rubble of a collapsed 30-story skyscraper that was under construction. Rescue teams using cranes and sniffer dogs are scanning the debris for signs of life. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt assured that efforts would continue despite the passing of the 72-hour survival window. “We have detected weak life signs in multiple locations. We will not give up,” he said.

Rising Death Toll

Myanmar’s official death toll stands at 1,700, but other reports suggest it may have already exceeded 2,000. The number is expected to rise as rescue teams reach more affected areas. In Thailand, 18 deaths have been confirmed, but authorities fear the toll could climb significantly if more survivors are not found soon.

Humanitarian Efforts and Challenges

The United Nations has begun rushing relief supplies to at least 23,000 displaced survivors in Myanmar. However, delivering aid remains a challenge due to damaged infrastructure and continued conflict. Reports indicate that Myanmar’s ruling military is still conducting airstrikes on villages, further complicating relief operations. International calls for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian efforts to proceed have been growing louder.

Global Aid Arrives

India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Russia have all sent aid, rescue teams, and medical supplies. The United States has pledged $2 million in assistance through humanitarian organizations operating in Myanmar. The crisis has put additional strain on Myanmar, a country already struggling with political instability since the military coup in 2021.

A Nation in Crisis

Even before the earthquake, Myanmar was in turmoil. The country has been in the grip of a civil war since the military overthrew the elected government in 2021. Over 3.5 million people have been displaced, and economic conditions have worsened. The quake has deepened the humanitarian crisis, leaving many without food, water, or medical care.

Urgent Need for Help

Aid agencies warn that the situation could deteriorate further if immediate action is not taken. With monsoon season approaching, displaced survivors are at risk of disease outbreaks and worsening living conditions. International organizations have urged countries to step up their assistance and help Myanmar recover from this catastrophic disaster.

As the world watches, rescuers continue their tireless work, hoping to find more survivors before time runs out. The tragedy has left Myanmar and parts of Thailand in mourning, but it has also shown the resilience and courage of those fighting to save lives in the face of overwhelming destruction.
