//Samsung Galaxy A56: AI-Powered Midrange Smartphone with Upgraded Design and Features//

Samsung has officially unveiled its latest midrange smartphone, the Galaxy A56, introducing a range of new AI-powered features and a refined design. With a starting price of $499 (or £499 in the UK), the A56 aims to offer premium-like features at an affordable price, competing with devices like Google’s upcoming Pixel 9a and Apple’s iPhone 16e. Alongside the A56, Samsung also announced the Galaxy A36 and A26, available at $399 and $299, respectively.

A Slimmer, Sleeker Galaxy A56

This year, Samsung has made notable refinements to the A56's design. The device is thinner than its predecessor, now measuring just 7.4mm compared to the A55’s 8.2mm thickness. Despite the slimmer profile, the A56 boasts a slightly larger 6.7-inch screen with minimized bezels, bringing it closer in appearance to the flagship Galaxy S25 series.

Samsung has also introduced a new brushed metal frame with a small but noticeable bump where the volume and power buttons are located. This subtle design choice makes the device easier to grip, enhancing overall ergonomics.

Camera Upgrades and AI Enhancements

The camera system on the A56 sees both improvements and trade-offs. The front-facing selfie camera has been downgraded to a 12-megapixel sensor, but the rear camera setup has been enhanced with a 50MP main sensor featuring an f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilization. The ultrawide camera has also been upgraded to 12MP, while a 5MP macro lens remains included.

AI-powered photography features play a major role in the A56’s camera experience. Users can take advantage of improved image signal processing for better low-light performance and smarter subject detection in portrait mode. The phone is capable of recognizing elements like faces, hair, sky, and grass to enhance bokeh effects.

Other AI-driven features include:

  • Object Eraser: Remove unwanted objects from photos effortlessly.

  • Auto Trim for Videos: Automatically crop and optimize video clips.

  • Create Filter: Apply color and tone from one image to another.

  • Best Face: Choose from multiple captures to ensure everyone in a group shot looks their best.

While these features aren’t new in the smartphone world, their inclusion in a midrange device like the A56 significantly narrows the gap between Samsung’s flagship and budget lineups.

Software and Performance Enhancements

The Galaxy A56 runs on Samsung's One UI 7, which introduces various style and functionality upgrades, including the Now Bar, revamped notification panel, and scalable widgets in different shapes and sizes.

Samsung has committed to providing six generations of OS updates and six years of security updates, an improvement over the A55’s four-year update promise. This level of software support ensures longevity for users who don’t upgrade their devices frequently.

Under the hood, the A56 is powered by Samsung’s 4nm Exynos 1580 processor, delivering an 18% boost in CPU performance over the A55. The device also retains a 5,000mAh battery but now supports 45W fast charging, allowing it to reach a full charge in just over an hour.

Samsung Galaxy A36 and A26: Budget-Friendly Alternatives

Alongside the A56, Samsung also announced the Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A26. Both devices feature 6.7-inch displays with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate. They also come with One UI 7 and select AI-powered features, such as Object Eraser and customizable filters.

However, some trade-offs exist:

  • The ultrawide camera on the A36 and A26 is limited to 8MP, compared to 12MP on the A56.

  • The Best Face feature is exclusive to the A56.

  • While all three devices have a 50MP main camera, the A36 and A26 are equipped with Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processors instead of the Exynos 1580 found in the A56.

  • RAM is limited to 6GB on the A36 and A26, whereas the A56 likely offers higher memory configurations.

Despite these differences, both the A36 and A26 share the IP67 water and dust resistance rating and 5,000mAh battery capacity with the A56, ensuring solid durability and battery life.

Price and Availability

The Galaxy A56 will be available for preorder in the UK on March 2, with an official launch on March 19. The device will come in four color options: Graphite, Olive, Pink, and Light Grey. While US pricing has been confirmed, Samsung has not yet provided a specific release date beyond "later this year."

With the midrange smartphone market heating up, the Galaxy A56 faces stiff competition from the iPhone 16e and the upcoming Pixel 9a. However, with its premium design elements, AI-driven photography, and extended software support, the A56 presents a compelling option for budget-conscious buyers looking for flagship-level features at a lower price point.

Stay tuned for more updates from MWC 2025, as Engadget continues to cover the latest in mobile technology.
