//Arson at Governor Josh Shapiro’s Residence: Shocking Attack Unfolds in Pennsylvania's Capital//

This image provided by Commonwealth Media Services shows damage from a fire at the Pennsylvania governor's mansion in Harrisburg early Sunday morning.

A quiet Sunday morning in Harrisburg turned into a scene of chaos and danger after a man allegedly attempted to assassinate Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro by setting fire to the state’s official governor’s residence. The early-morning arson attack has sparked national outrage and renewed concerns about rising political violence across the United States.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro speaks at a news conference Sunday after an alleged arson at the governor's residence that occurred overnight while he and his family were asleep inside.

Governor and Family Survive Violent Attack While Asleep Inside

Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were asleep inside the mansion when flames erupted in multiple rooms, triggered by incendiary devices allegedly thrown into the residence. Surveillance footage and a detailed police affidavit show that 38-year-old Cody Balmer climbed over the perimeter fence, broke into the building, and set the fire with two homemade Molotov cocktails.

Authorities say that if Balmer had encountered Shapiro in person, he planned to attack him with a hammer.

Despite the terrifying nature of the crime, no injuries were reported. However, significant damage was sustained in the piano and dining rooms.

“This type of violence is not OK... it has to stop. We have to be better than this,” Shapiro said during a press conference, clearly shaken but resolute.

What We Know About the Attack

Here are the key details from the investigation:

  • Method of Attack: Balmer created Molotov cocktails using gasoline from a lawnmower and Heineken beer bottles.

  • Timeline: He scaled the fence, broke two windows, entered the home, and threw firebombs — all in less than a minute.

  • Escape: After igniting the fire, he exited through the dining room and fled the property before later turning himself in.

Fire damage is seen inside the Pennsylvania governor's residences following a suspected arson attack Sunday. Police have charged Cody Balmer with attempted murder and other crimes.

Police found charred Heineken bottles, a sledgehammer, and clothing at his home matching items seen in security footage. Balmer reportedly confessed to his ex-partner and then approached police on his own.

Charges Filed: Attempted Murder and Terrorism

Balmer has been charged with:

  • Attempted murder

  • Aggravated arson

  • Terroristic threats

  • Criminal trespass

  • Reckless endangerment

He is currently in custody and receiving medical care unrelated to the incident, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Shapiro Speaks Out Against Political Violence

Governor Shapiro strongly condemned the attack and called for unity, regardless of political affiliation. His message resonated across party lines as elected officials and citizens expressed concern over the growing normalization of politically motivated attacks in the U.S.

“I don’t give a damn if it’s coming from one side or the other... this kind of violence is becoming far too common,” Shapiro stated.

Who Is Cody Balmer? What Was His Motive?

While the investigation is ongoing, police revealed that Balmer told officers he had been “harboring hatred” toward Shapiro. He also acknowledged being fully aware that people were inside the house when he launched the attack.

His motive appears rooted in personal animosity, though it remains unclear whether broader ideological influences were involved.

Security Questions Raised After Breach

The fact that Balmer was able to scale a fence, evade state troopers, and enter the building raises serious questions about security protocols at one of Pennsylvania’s most protected properties. Police say they were alerted to a perimeter breach but could not locate Balmer before the arson was committed.

What Happens Next?

Authorities will likely review and strengthen security at the governor’s mansion, while the court system prepares for what could be a high-profile trial. Meanwhile, Pennsylvanians are left grappling with a chilling reality: even top state leaders are not immune from politically charged violence.

Why This Matters

This incident isn't just about one man or one attack — it reflects the growing volatility of political discourse and the disturbing rise in threats against elected officials. From local mayors to members of Congress and now state governors, the threat of violence has become an urgent national issue.
